The Club Atlético Gimnasia y Esgrima de Jujuy is a sports club from San Salvador de Jujuy , a town at the foot of the Andes in northwestern Argentina . Although the name translated means gymnastics and fencing club , today it is best known for its football department . The first team plays in the Primera División , making it the most successful in the region.
history
The athletic rise of the club's soccer team began in the 1960s. In 1965 he took part in an Argentine soccer championship for the first time. In the eight participations until 1985, the greatest success was the 4th place in 1975. After the establishment of the modern league system in 1985, the club first had to go through a dry spell in which it was relegated to the third division, the Torneo del Interior . In 1993 he rose back to the Nacional B and marched straight through to the first division, in which he rose in 1994 after a sovereign championship title of the second division.
Gimnasia remained in the Primera División until 2000 and reached 4th place in the 1998 Clausura. In 2005 the club was able to rise again and again reached fourth place in the Clausura 2006, which has remained the best placement to this day. Today the club has established itself as the only one in Northern Argentina in the Primera División.
