Bouna Sarr (born January 31, 1992 in Lyon ) is a French football player on the position of a defender and winger . He has been under contract with the French first division club Olympique Marseille since 2015 .

Club career

Via FC Gerland and Olympique Lyon to FC Metz

Bouna Sarr was born on January 31, 1992 as the son of a Senegalese and a Guinean in the city of Lyon in southeast France. At the age of six or seven he began his career as a football player in his neighborhood with the amateur club FC Gerland in the 7th arrondissement of Lyon . Here he went through all youth league classes before moving to the junior division of the major Lyon club Olympique Lyon in 2005 . After a few years with the youngsters there, another change occurred for the young defensive player; This time, in 2009, he went to Metz , more than four hours away by car , where the then 17-year-old was part of the FC Metz U-19 team . In the following year, he won the Coupe Gambardella , the French football cup for youth club teams, with this same team . Sarr made his debut in men's football in the 2010/11 season when he was sent onto the field for Djemel N'Ganvala on February 16, 2011 by the coach of the B team, José Pinot , in the 65th minute of play . The game in the fourth-class CFA ended in a 2-0 away win for FC Metz B. This was also Sarr's only appearance in a competitive game for a men's team in the 2010/11 season.

In the following 2011/12 season, Sarr came to increased stakes in the B-team, for which he made 18 league appearances and six goals by the end of the season. In the final standings, he and the team ranked fifth in the table. Sarr, who was mostly used as a right defender, made his professional debut on July 29, 2011, when he was substituted on for Pierre Bouby by coach Dominique Bijotat in the 1-0 away defeat against FC Tours in the 68th minute . In the following weeks Sarr came to regular missions, but from the beginning of September became less again, when he stayed primarily in the reserve team. After seven league games in autumn, he was only used in two championship games of the professionals in spring and ended with these the season on 18th of 20th place in the table, which meant relegation to the French third division. In his last game of the season on May 18, 2012, he scored the 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute of a 1-1 home draw against FC Tour and thus his first competitive goal as a professional.

Regular player from 2012/13

In the Championnat National 2012/13 Sarr advanced to a regular force and was used by the now coach Albert Cartier in 29 of 38 league games that were possible, scoring three goals. With a second place in the final standings (six points behind champions US Créteil ), FC Metz rose directly back to Ligue 2. There were also three appearances in the Coupe de la Ligue 2012/13 , in which FC Metz was only eliminated in the third round after a 3-0 defeat against SC Bastia . When his team retired early in the Coupe de France 2012/13 , Sarr was not taken into account; in this competition, however, he made his debut last year when he was eliminated with the team in the first round against FC Évian Thonon Gaillard . Furthermore, the 1.77 m tall defensive player also made four league appearances and one goal for the B-team, which was relegated to the fifth-highest football league in the country in the final table, in 16th place.

In the following 2013/14 season, Cartier continued to work as a regular, mainly in various midfield positions, helping his team to march straight through to Ligue 1 . He scored one goal in 28 league appearances and made five assists for his teammates. There was also a use in the Coupe de la Ligue 2013/14 , in which the team was defeated in the first round against SM Caen . From the twelfth round of the game, FC Metz was leader of the table and held this place in the table until the 38th and last round, after which they were eleven and twelve points behind the two pursuers RC Lens and SM Caen, and together with the other two French second division champions Clubs rose to the top.

In the 2014/15 season , Sarr was mainly used as a right winger, but also played in various other positions, helped out in attacking midfield and was even used as a hanging tip. After having been entrusted with regular assignments but with less playing time in recent years, he has been a constant performer on the wings, especially from the beginning of 2015. From this time on, FC Metz was already involved in the relegation battle and after round 20 were already in last place in the table. Although Sarr's current stakes from the start and over the full playing time, he could not help his team from the bottom of the table and ended the season with this on the 19th and penultimate place in the table, which meant a relegation back to Ligue 2. In 30 league appearances, the 1.77 m tall winger had two hits and three assists; unlike in previous years, he also received more yellow cards . He scored another goal in the Coupe de France 2014/15 when he contributed the goal to 2-0 in the second round match against the US Avranches . He himself was used in two of his team's three cup games and also played one of the second league cup games this season , in which, among other things , he succeeded in making an assist.

Transfer to Olympique Marseille

On July 3, 2015, the French first division team Olympique Marseille announced the commitment of Sarr and at that time only waited for the result of the medical tests. After this was positive, the fixed contract was announced three days after the announcement. Sarr signed a five-year contract and a rumored transfer fee of around 1.5 million euros was due. After he had already made a positive impression in the preparation for the season and contributed two goals for his new employer in the friendlies, coach Marcelo Bielsa used him in the first game of the 2015/16 season ; here he came in the 0-1 away defeat against SM Caen in minute 65 as a replacement for Mario Lemina on the lawn. On the already heavily occupied right side (including Florian Thauvin as right winger or Javi Manquillo , Mauricio Isla or Brice Dja Djédjé on the right side of defense) it was not easy for Bouna Sarr to make the breakthrough and prove himself as a regular player. Nevertheless, he made 25 appearances in the highest football league in the country, but was mainly intended as a substitute player. In the league, he scored two goals and made one assist. On September 17, 2015 was Sarr also his debut in the UEFA Europa League when he in the first group match of Group F after 75 minutes for Romain Alessandrini came on. Of the subsequent seven Europa League games his team played, he only made two short appearances. With the club from Marseille , he was eliminated in the round of 32 against Athletic Bilbao . Sarr also made other competitive appearances this season in the Coupe de France 2015/16 , in which he himself played three games and made it to the final with the team, but lost it 2: 4 against Paris Saint-Germain . He also made two appearances in the Coupe de la Ligue 2015/16 , scored a goal in the round of 16 and was eliminated with the team in the quarter-finals in extra time against FC Toulouse .

With Olympique Marseille, which ended the 2015/16 season in 13th place in the table, he made it to 5th place in 2016/17 , but had even less playing time than a season earlier. After he was already under Marco Bielsa , interim coach Franck Passi and his successor José Miguel González only as a substitute player, this did not really change even after Passis was again signed as head coach. While he was still used for the full duration of the game under Passi, his successor Rudi Garcia only used him as a substitute player and mostly only for a few minutes shortly before the end of the game. By the end of the season, Sarr had a record of 26 league games and two assists. This year he was mainly used as a left winger and shared this position with, among others, the goal-threatening regular Lucas Ocampos . In the Coupe de France 2016/17 , as well as in the Coupe de la Ligue 2016/17 , Olympique Marseille was eliminated in the round of 16; while he ran up in the cup in the first round match, he completed two games in the league cup and scored one goal.

In Ligue 1 2017/18 , Sarr started cautiously and mostly only made short appearances in the first half or sat on the bench without being used. He was also not considered by Garcia in qualifying for the 2017/18 Europa League . However, it was different for him after successful qualification; Sarr, who this season gave up his position as right or left winger and henceforth ran as a right-back, was used in all 15 Europa League games of his team from the group stage. Second in Group I behind Red Bull Salzburg , the team made it to the round of 32 and defeated Sporting Braga in this one . This was followed by victories over Athletic Bilbao in the round of 16, RB Leipzig in the quarter-finals and again Red Bull Salzburg in the semi-finals. In the subsequent 3-0 defeat in the final against Atlético Madrid on May 16, 2018, Sarr also played through the full 90 minutes. In the league it was also successful from the new year 2018, whereby he mostly acted as a regular player on the right side of the defensive row and ended this season with the team in fourth place. In total, he was used in 48 competitive games this season; 29 of them in the league, 15 in the Europa League, three in the Coupe de France 2017/18 and one in the Coupe de la Ligue 2017/18 . In the last two competitions he was eliminated with his team in the quarter-finals and the last sixteen. Due to his consistently strong performance as a right-back, Bouna Sarr's contract with Olympique Marseille, which expired in 2020, was prematurely extended for two more years until June 30, 2022 at the beginning of May 2018.

National team career

On December 30, 2014, Sarr, who would be eligible to play for France as well as Senegal and Guinea, was called up for the first time in the Guinean national football team . Under coach Michel Dussuyer he was supposed to take part in the Africa Cup 2015 , which took place between January and February 2015, but decided against participating and announced that he wanted to stay with his club, then still FC Metz.

A little more than three years later, according to various media reports, Sarr was already on the verge of being called up for the French national team . The French national coach Didier Deschamps should nominate him for the friendly internationals in March 2018; but that did not happen.

At the end of April 2018, Sarr was called up for the first time in the national team of his father's home country , but turned down this invitation because he wanted to start for France. Senegal had promised him a possible participation in the 2018 World Cup .
