The Faro del Gianicolo lighthouse

The Faro del Gianicolo lighthouse is located in the Trastevere district , on the Gianicolo hill , in Rome . The structure was built with Lombard limestone and is 20 meters high. A column is placed on the circular base, which carries a glass lantern, from which the Italian national colors green-white-red are beamed into the night sky.

The building was designed and built in 1911, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Italian kingdom, by the architect Manfredo Manfredi , who acted on behalf of Italians who had emigrated to Argentina. The dedication of the donors is affixed to the capital of the column:

A ROMA CAPITALE - GLI ITALIANI D'ARGENTINA. MCMXI (For the capital Rome - the Italians from Argentina. 1911).

With the unofficial approval of the local police and judiciary, the area around the building was used for family communication between inmates in the nearby Regina Coeli prison and their relatives from the lighthouse by means of light signals. For safety reasons, it is currently no longer possible to enter the building.
