Marian Borkowski

Marian Borkowski (born August 17, 1934 in Pabianice ) is a Polish composer, pianist, musicologist and music teacher.

education

Borkowski studied from 1959 to 1965 at the Music Academy in Warsaw composition with Kazimierz Sikorski and piano with January Ekier and Natalia Hornowska , in parallel at the Warsaw University musicology with Józef Michał Chomiński (graduating with master's degree in 1966). On a scholarship from the French government, he continued his training in composition with Nadia Boulanger and Olivier Messiaen at the Paris Conservatory and at the American Conservatory , with Iannis Xenakis at the École Pratique des Hautes Etudes and in musicology at the University of Paris with Jacques Chailley and Barry S. Brook continued. At the same time he studied philosophy with Jean Hyppolite and Jules Vuillemin at the Sorbonne and at the Collège de France . He took courses from György Ligeti , Xenakis, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Franco Donatoni at the Darmstadt summer courses and at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena .

Teaching

From 1968 he taught at the Warsaw Music Academy ( Fryderyk Chopin University for Music ). He was Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Composition, Conducting and Music Theory (1975–78), Vice President of the Music Academy (1978–81 and 1987–90), Dean of the Faculty of Composition, Conducting and Music Theory (from 1996) and head of the postgraduate program in music theory (from 1998). From 1989 he held a full professorship and from 1993 the chair for music theory. From 1989 he also taught as a visiting professor at music colleges and universities in France, Italy, Canada, the USA and South Korea.

Awards

Borkowski won prizes and awards with his compositions. a. at the competition for young composers in Warsaw in 1966, at the Viotti competition in Vercelli in 1969, at the Szymanowski competition in Warsaw in 1974 and at the international competition for composers of new music in 1990 in New York. He received several prizes from the Polish Ministry of Culture, the Silver Cross of Merit of the Republic of Poland (1977), the Medal of the Chopin Academy (1981) and the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (1984). His compositions are performed worldwide and recorded for radio and television.
