Szymon Kawalla

Szymon Piotr Kawalla (born June 2, 1949 in Krakow ) is a Polish conductor, violinist, composer and music teacher.

Kawalla received his first violin lessons from his father at the age of five. He then attended the violin class of Eugenia Umińska at the State Music High School in his hometown and studied with David Oistrakh at the Moscow Conservatory until 1970 . Until 1972 he was a student of Tadeusz Wroński , Krzysztof Jakowicz and Zenona Bąkowski at the Warsaw State Music Academy . At the University of Warsaw he studied conducting with Stanisław Wisłocki (until 1973) and composition with Marian Borkowski , Piotr Perkowski and Włodzimierz Kotoński (until 1974). Finally, he completed his training with Paweł Klecki and Igor Markevitch (conducting) and Mathilde Graef (chamber music).

1975–80 he taught at the Music Academy in Bydgoszcz, 1980–86 at the Pedagogical University in Zielona Góra. Since 1986 he has been leading the conducting class at the Warsaw Music Academy. In 1992 he received the title of music professor. He also gave international master classes in Żagań, Łańcut, Taegu and Jeju in South Korea. He heads the Department of Music Education and Literature and the Music Laboratory at the Institute of Art Education in the Faculty of Education of the Academy of Special Education in Warsaw.

Since 1966 Kawalla has been giving concerts at home and abroad, in countries such as England, Austria, Belgium, Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Iran, Yugoslavia, Canada, South Korea, Cuba, and Luxembourg , Germany, Norway, Russia, Romania, Slovakia, the USA, Switzerland, Sweden, Ukraine, the Vatican, Hungary and Italy. From 1974 to 1978 Kawalla directed the Pomeranian Philharmonic in Bydgoszcz.

As executive and artistic director as well as chief conductor he worked for the State Chamber Orchestra in Toruń (1979-80), the Philharmonic Zielona Góra and the Chamber Opera Żagańska (1980-86) as well as the symphony orchestra and the choir of the Polish Radio and Television in Krakow (1985 to 1991). From 1992 to 1995 he was artistic advisor and chief conductor of the Koszalin Philharmonic, and from 1995 to 2001 artistic director and chief conductor of the Kielce Philharmonic and the Kielce Opera Theater. Since 2001 he has been Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Chamber Choir of the Warsaw Chamber Opera .

Kawalla received many awards, including the Silver Cross of Merit of the Republic of Poland (1985), the Knight's Cross and the Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (1996 and 2004) as well as the Bene Meritus medal from the Society of Friends of Fine Arts.
