For the club he made his debut in the top Hungarian league in the 2014/15 season . After 47 league appearances in two seasons and relegation at the end of the 2015/16 season, Sallai played the following season on loan with the Italian first division club US Palermo . For the club he played a total of 21 league appearances during the season, but the club had to relegate at the end of the season as penultimate and Sallai briefly returned to Hungary. At the end of August 2017, Sallai switched to the Cypriot record champions APOEL Nicosia and scored nine goals in 29 appearances during the season when the club managed to defend their title. He also played all six games in the UEFA Champions League when the team drew two times against German representative Borussia Dortmund .
On August 31, 2018, Sallai moved to the German Bundesliga club SC Freiburg for 4.5 million euros . The Freiburg sports director Hartenbach presented Sallai as a "variable offensive player who likes to come over the flanks". At the beginning of the first season things went well for Sallai. In his first Bundesliga game on the 4th matchday of the 2018/19 season, he scored from the point in a 3-1 win in Wolfsburg and from there was regularly in the Freiburg squad. From November onwards, Sallai suffered from adductor irritation and was absent for 16 match days. On May 5, 2019, after a six-month break, he celebrated his Bundesliga comeback on matchday 32 in the game against Fortuna Düsseldorf and also played minutes in the following last two game days.
National team
Shortly before his 19th birthday on May 20, 2016, the longtime junior international made his debut in the Hungarian senior team in a friendly against Ivory Coast . The game served as preparation for the 2016 European Championship in France, but Sallai missed the leap into the tournament list. In his eighth appearance on June 9, 2018 in a friendly against Australia , he was in the starting line-up for the first time. On September 11th of the same year he scored his first goal for the national team in the game against Greece .
