This article covers the English national football team at the 2010 World Cup .

qualification

The team qualified for the World Cup in South Africa through the qualifying matches of the European football association UEFA .

The team met in the first round in Group 6 of the Ukraine , Croatia , Belarus , Kazakhstan and Andorra . In the ten encounters England had a record of nine wins, which were faced with a defeat (0-1 against Ukraine). England qualified as group winners directly for the World Cup finals.

English contingent

The English national coach Fabio Capello announced on May 11, 2010 a provisional line-up of 30 players. On June 1, Leighton Baines , Darren Bent , Michael Dawson , Tom Huddlestone , Adam Johnson , Scott Parker and Theo Walcott were removed from the World Cup squad. The actual captain Rio Ferdinand suffered a knee injury during training on June 4th. Michael Dawson was nominated for him. Steven Gerrard wears the armband .

In the preliminary round of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the English national football team met in Group C against the United States , Algeria and Slovenia . In the first two games, the group favorite struggled and only played a draw. In the decisive third game, however, they were able to prevail 1-0 against the Slovenes. With only two preliminary round goals, it was only enough for second place in the final table.
