Switzerland started the tournament with a big surprise. Against the European champions and one of the tournament favorites Spain, they managed an opening win thanks to a convincing defense. In the second game against Chile they remained without conceding a goal for a long time and set a new record with 559 minutes in a row at the World Championships. However, they lost the second game after losing a player early to being sent off due to a tough referee decision. In the last game, the Swiss had it in their own hands to make it through to the round of 16, but against Honduras they couldn't get past 0-0.
