It was exciting in Group IV. England achieved a 4: 4 n.V. against Belgium and the 2: 0 over Switzerland, which in turn defeated Italy 2: 1. But since Italy knocked out the Belgians 4-1, the Confederates and the Azzuris had to play in the decider. The hosts won a convincing 4-1 victory over their southern neighbors in Basel.

The highest-scoring game in World Cup history rose in Lausanne between the hosts and Austria. In the crazy match, the Swiss were already 3-0 up after 23 minutes. Fifteen minutes later, however, Austria was 5-3 ahead. The teams came out of the lockers 5: 4. 6: 4, 6: 5 and 7: 5 was the next hit sequence and Austria had, as expected, knocked Switzerland out of the tournament despite their large handicap.
