Hungarian team games

Preliminary round

Hungary had to qualify for their third World Cup participation - in 1934 the tournament was already over after the quarter-finals and in 1938 they became vice world champions - against Poland . Since the only group opponent waived, Hungary was the second team ever to qualify for the finals after hosts Switzerland. There in the group stage the teams from the Federal Republic of Germany, Turkey and South Korea were the opponents of the Magyars, who were considered the best team in the world at the time. In the first game against South Korea everything went as expected. Already at half time it was 4-0 after goals from Ferenc Puskás (11th minute), Mihály Lantos (16th minute) and twice Sándor Kocsis (24th and 31st minute). It continued at this pace. Again Sándor Kocsis increased in the 50th minute to 5-0. Zoltán Czibor filled half a dozen in the 60th minute. Furthermore, Peter Palotas signed the goal list in this game. He scored the 7-0 (76th minute) and the 8-0 (83rd minute). The final point was reserved for the captain. Puskás put an end to target shooting with the 9-0 in the 90th minute. With this 9-0, Hungary held a record for 28 years, namely the highest World Cup victory. This brand only outbid its own national team at the world tournament in Spain in 1982 when they outclassed El Salvador 10: 1 in Elche . The second group game was against the Federal Republic of Germany. Nothing to worry about if you want to believe the words of Hungary's coach Gusztáv Sebes , who was a guest at a German qualifying match and said that the Germans could not endanger his team. "Through Kocsis (3. minute), Puskás (18th minute) and again Kocsis (20th minute) was already after 20 minutes. 3: 0 for the Magyars even before halftime was Alfred Pfaff on. 1: 3 shorten after halftime increased Nándor Hidegkuti with two goals to 5: 1 (52nd minute, 56th minute). Ten minutes later his teammate József Tóth made it 6: 1 (67th minute), Helmut Rahn (77th minute) and Richard Herrmann (81st minute) for Germany as well as J. Toth (73rd minute) and Kocsis (78th minute) for Hungary produced the final result of 8: 3. This made Hungary group first. But this game also had consequences for Hungary. The partially over-hard acting Germans injured in person from Vorstopper Werner Liebrich the Hungarian en captain Ferenc Puskás so much that he had to pause a few games and was not in top shape for the later final.

Quarter finals

Hungary had finished the first round in the group and therefore met Brazil in the quarter-finals , who finished second behind Yugoslavia in the first round. The Seleção had so far been the only team to have participated in all soccer world championships and, after losing the final at the home World Cup in 1950, wanted to finally win their first title when they participated for the fifth time. After four minutes, center forward Hidegkuti brought the Hungarians, who were favorites despite the Brazilians' playfulness, into the lead. Three minutes later, Kocsis increased to 2-0. In the 18th minute of play, England referee Arthur Ellis ruled on a penalty after Brazilian striker Índio was fouled. Djalma Santos converted this penalty to make it a 1: 2 tie for Brazil. It stayed that way until the break whistle. For a long time, little happened in the second half before another whistle sounded in the 60th minute after a duel in the penalty area. Mihály Lantos kept his nerve and scored to 3-1 for the Magyars. Just five minutes later, Julinho brought the Brazilians back into play , making it 3-2. In the 71st minute, Hungary's Bozsik felt that he had been treated unfairly after he was knocked over by Nílton Santos from Brazil and the referee did not whistle. Bozsik went to Santos, both engaged in a scuffle and were eventually expelled from the place by Ellis. Eight minutes later, the Brazilian striker Humberto hit his Hungarian opponent Czibor in the face and was sent off as the third player. The final point was set by Kocsis 4-2 in the 88th minute. After the final whistle, the fights continued after the Brazilians attacked the Hungarians in their locker rooms. Bottles and shoes flew and the players beat each other. At least one Hungarian player was passed out after the clashes, and coach Sébes had to be stitched after being injured by a bottle.

  • Hungary 4-2 Brazil - Goals: 1-0 Hidegkuti (4th min.), 2-0 Kocsis (7th min.), 2-1 Djalma Santos (18th minute from a penalty kick), 3-1 Lantos ( 53.min. By penalty kick), 3: 2 Julinho (65.min.), 4: 2 Kocsis (90.min.)

Semifinals

In the semifinals, the Hungarians had to take the Uruguay hurdle . The reigning world champion, who in 1950 beat Brazil 2-1 in front of 200,000 spectators in the huge soccer temple of Rio de Janeiro , the Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho , but mostly known to the world under his unofficial name Estádio do Maracanã , with 2: 1 and for the second time after being crowned soccer world champion in 1930 , finished second in group 3 behind Austria in the group stage. Celeste , as the national team of the small country on the Río de la Plata is called, had 2-0 against Czechoslovakia and 7th against Scotland : 0 won. In the quarter-finals, the Urus then defeated England 4-2. The Hungarians had been unbeaten for almost four years, but Uruguay almost caught the surprise. First, however, Hungary took the lead in the 13th minute through Zoltán Czibor. Nándor Hidegkuti was able to extend the lead to 2-0 just seconds after the half-time whistle. Now the Magyars stopped defending their leadership, which they failed to do. A quarter of an hour before the end of the ninety minutes, Juan Hohberg scored the next goal to make it 2-1. Ten minutes later it was 2-2 after Hohberg had scored again for Uruguay. So the favorite had to go into extra time and staggered seriously for the first time in this game. The tremor continued until the 111th minute. In the same minute, Sándor Kocsis scored one of his many headed goals, which is why he was also known as "the golden head". It was already his tenth goal at the 1954 World Cup. Five minutes later, the South Americans' last resistance was finally broken, because Kocsis was again successful to 4-2 - his 11th World Cup goal - and his last at the same time.

  • Hungary 4-2 Uruguay - goals: 1-0 Czibor (13th min.), 2-0 Hidegkuti (46th min.), 2-1 Hohberg (75th min.), 2-2 Hohberg (86th min.) .), 3: 2 Kocsis (111th min.), 4: 2 Kocsis (116th min.)
