In Group II, the favored Hungarians started with a 9-0 victory over the alleged point supplier South Korea. Germany had the seeded Turks as opponents in their first game. Although the Herberger-Elf fell behind after three minutes, the players around playmaker Fritz Walter could not be dissuaded from their path. Schäfer equalized after just under a quarter of an hour. Despite clear superiority, it took until the 50th minute before Klodt got the 2-1. After that, Ottmar Walter and Max Morlock produced the appropriate final result of 4: 1. Against the Hungarians in the following game, Sepp Herberger put up a better reserve team and surprised friends, foes and experts. There was a legendary 3: 8 against the furiously magical Magyars. Since Turkey had knocked over South Korea 7-0, the Germans had to face the men from the Bosporus a second time. Again starting with the supposedly best line-up, the second clash between the two opponents was also a triumphant advance for the Germans. 7: 2 was the clear final result, with Max Morlock particularly noticeable with three hits.
