Rober İsaac Eryol (born December 21, 1930 in Mersin , † December 21, 2000 in Maltepe , Istanbul ) was a Turkish football player . Due to his many years of work for Galatasaray Istanbul , he is strongly associated with this club. He was an important part of the team in which he had a very strong influence on Turkish football in the 1950s with players such as Metin Oktay , Suat Mamat , İsfendiyar Açıksöz , Kadri Aytaç and Turgay Şeren . With the Turkish national team he took part in the 1954 World Cup.

childhood

Eryol was born in 1930 to Jewish Turks in the southern Anatolian city of Mersin . During the First World War , his grandfather died as a soldier in the Battle of Gallipoli . In 1937 the family moved to the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul and settled in the Beyoğlu district (also known as Pera ). Within this district, people moved to the Taksim district, where many minorities lived at that time. Here he graduated from the renowned Saint-Joseph-Gymnasium in 1950 .

Career

society

After his family moved to Istanbul in 1937, young Eryol started playing football on the street here. After playing for several amateur clubs, several teams noticed him and tried to sign him. The two Istanbul clubs Beyoğluspor and Taksim SK were among those interested . But since both teams were clubs of the non-Muslim minorities and at that time their players also belonged to these minorities, Eryol declined these offers. He always saw himself as a Turkish citizen and therefore decided at the age of 16 to play in the youth of the local Beyoğlu club, Galatasaray Istanbul .

In 1948 he was accepted into the squad by the then coach of the men's team, the Englishman Peter Molloy . At that time there was no national football league in Turkey. Instead, there were regional leagues in metropolitan areas such as Istanbul , Ankara and Izmir , of which the İstanbul Futbol Ligi (German: Istanbul Football League ) was considered the most renowned. In addition, from 1936 an attempt was made to establish a kind of national championship with the Türkiye Maarif Mükafatı , a national football league of Turkey designed as a tournament and held at irregular intervals. Eryol made his debut for Galatasaray at the age of eighteen during the game in the Istanbul Football League on March 28, 1948 against Beşiktaş Istanbul . In this game Eryol played the full length of the game. By the end of the season on June 5, 1948, Eryol completed another encounter for his team. The following season ended his team with the championship, with Eryol not completing a game. Eryol came back to stakes in the 1949/50 season. He played two games and scored one goal. In the summer of 1950, the Englishman Donald Lockhead took over as coach at Galatasaray. Under this coach Eryol came to more stakes.

In 1952, the Istanbul Football League was transferred to a professional league called İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi (German: Istanbul Professional League ). Most of the Istanbul teams took part in this league. Eryol took part in this league with Galatasaray and won a regular place here. He completed twelve of the 15 league games. The season ended the red-yellow behind Beşiktaş as runner-up. The new season started again with Lockhead, but this coach was replaced after the 4th game day by the former player legend and long-time team captain of the club, Gündüz Kılıç . Kılıç had ended his football career at the end of the previous season and then took over the coaching post of the club's reserve team. Under his team captain last season, Eryol kept his regular place and was used in 16 of the 18 league matches.

After you missed the championship in the season 1952/53, you replaced Kılıç by the Hungarian coach László Székely . Even under this coach, Eryol remained an undisputed regular player and became one of the best right-backs in the league. The then coach of the Turkish national team , the Italian Sandro Puppo , noticed the youngster and nominated him for a test match against the Swiss national team . Székely was replaced by his predecessor Gündüz Kılıç after the 10th day of the 1953/54 season . Under Kılıç, Eryol cemented his position of left-back and became one of the best left-back players in the league. Galatasaray missed the championship at the end of the season 1953/54 and was again runner-up behind Beşiktaş. In the next season, the season 1954/55, Galatasaray ended the season for the first time with the championship of the Istanbul professional league. While Eryol was still used regularly in the season 1954/55, he sat in the season 1955/56, partly due to his military service, mostly on the bench and completed six league games. He completed an officer training and so stayed longer away from team operations than other players who had to complete regular military service. He had to travel from Balıkesir for the weekend and so missed a large part of the training. After he found little consideration in the squad selection for the following season due to his absence, he decided in October 1956 to end his active football career at the age of 26.

National team

Eryol was nominated for the second selection of the Turkish national team in 1951 and made his debut against France's second selection on November 1, 1951.

After he persuaded in 1953 by good performances for his club Galatasaray on the position of left-back, the coach Sandro Puppo nominated him for a friendly against the Swiss national team on May 25, 1953. Eryol was during that game his international debut for the A team . From then on he was one of the regularly nominated national players for two years.

He was also named to the Turkey squad for the 1954 World Cup . At the end of the group stage, they finished second in the table, tied with the German selection . Although they had the better goal difference, according to the rules of the time, the group runners-up was decided by a playoff between these two teams. Germany decided this encounter 7-2 for themselves. Eryol played all six of his team's games during this tournament. After the World Cup, Eryol was no longer considered in the national team.

In addition to his work for the regular national team, he also played a few times for the Turkish national military team. With this he became military world champion in 1955 .

Coaching career

After the end of his playing career, Eryol worked as an officer in the Turkish Armed Forces . In 1961 he ended his military career and stayed often in Israel . Here he took over the coaching position at Maccabi Tel Aviv . After this first coaching experience, he stopped working as a coach. For a while he was a club official at Galatasaray.
