Erol Keskin (born March 2, 1927 in Istanbul ; † October 1, 2016 there ) was a Turkish football player . Through his long activity for Fenerbahçe Istanbul , he was strongly associated with this club. He was also one of the most important players in his second club, Adalet SK . With the Turkish national team , he took part in the 1954 World Cup and the 1948 Summer Olympics.

Player career

society

Keskin began his professional football career at the traditional Istanbul club Fenerbahçe Istanbul . At that time there was no international professional league in Turkey. Instead, regional leagues existed in metropolitan areas such as Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir , of which the İstanbul Futbol Ligi (German: Istanbul Football League ) was considered the most renowned. In addition, from 1936 an attempt was made to establish a kind of national championship with the Türkiye Maarif Mükafatı . A national football league of Turkey designed as a tournament and held irregularly. Keskin made his debut for Fenerbahçe in Maarif Mükafatı on April 16, 1944 against Vefa Istanbul . In this game, Keskin also scored his first goal. By the end of the season on May 15, 1943, Keskin completed three more games. For the new season Fenerbahçe took part in the regular game of the Istanbul Football League. Keskin was used in only one game during the 1944/45 season, but instead completed almost all of his team's games in the Cup of the Ministry of Education and the Prime Minister's Cup . His team won both trophies and was runner-up in the Istanbul Football League behind arch rivals Beşiktaş Istanbul . From the summer of 1945 Keskin rose to become a regular player and, with small interruptions, was set as a striker for the next six seasons. The season 1945/46 he finished with his team again as runner-up and again won the Cup of the Ministry of Education . The following season he succeeded with Fenerbahçe the championship of the Istanbul Football League and in the season 1947/48 the title defense. Keskin played three more seasons for Fenerbahçe and was only able to win the Cup of the Ministry of Education and the Prime Minister's Cup during this time with his team in the 1949/50 season.

1951 Keskin left Fenerbahçe and switched to city rivals Adalet SK . With this club he played until the summer of 1952 in the İstanbul İkinci Küme (German: Second Istanbul League ), which included clubs such as Eyüpspor , Beyoğluspor , İstanbulspor , Kasımpaşa Istanbul , Topkapı Istanbul , Rami SK and Taksim SK . In the meantime, football in Istanbul was reformed in the spring and the previous İstanbul Futbol Ligi (German: Istanbul Football League ) was transferred to the İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi (German: Istanbul Professional League ). The first season of this new league took place from spring 1952 to summer 1952. Then in the second season the league was expanded from eight to ten teams. From the 2nd Istanbul league, the two teams Adalet SK and Beyoğluspor were added, which Keskin played with his team in this league from now on. Keskin played for Adalet for the next seven seasons and was able to win the Ataturk Cup with his team in 1955 .

At the end of the 1957/58 season, Keskin ended his playing career and became a club official at Adalet. A month later, he resigned from his position as a club official. A year after the end of his football career, Keskin hinted at a comeback as a player at Adalat after it was announced that Halil Özyazıcı would be head coach again at Adalet. So Keskin took part in the training of Adalet after the renewed employment of Özyazıcıs. Later it didn't come to the hoped-for comeback.

National team

Keskin was nominated for the first time in April 1948 in the squad of the Turkish national team . Here he made his international debut as part of a friendly against the Greek national team . After this game he was one of the regularly nominated players for the next four years and took part in the 1948 Summer Olympics with the national team. Here Keskin reached the quarter-finals with his team and failed in this with a 1: 3 defeat at Yugoslavia . Keskin played every two games of his team during this tournament.

In the summer of 1949 Keskin took part with Turkey in the Mediterranean Cup and is second behind the second selection of the Italian national team .

Keskin was part of the first game of the Turkish U-21 national team , which was played on October 28, 1950 as part of the Mediterranean Cup against the Egyptian U-21 national team .

Keskin was named to the Turkish squad for the 1954 World Cup in 1954 . At the end of the group stage, they finished second in the table, tied with the German selection . Although they had the better goal difference, according to the rules of the time, the group runners-up was decided by a playoff between these two teams. Germany decided this encounter 7-2 for themselves. Keskin played three games during this tournament and scored in the game against the South Korean national team to make it 7-0 for his team. After the World Cup, Keskin was no longer considered for the national team.
