Ali Beratlıgil (born October 21, 1931 in İzmit ; † February 1, 2016 in Bursa ) was a Turkish football player , coach and official. Due to his longstanding activity for Galatasaray Istanbul , he is strongly associated with this club. He was a very important part of the team in which he had a very strong influence on Turkish football in the 1950s with players such as Metin Oktay , Suat Mamat , İsfendiyar Açıksöz , Kadri Aytaç and Turgay Şeren . Since Ali Soydan was another player with the name Ali during his active time at Galatasaray , Beratlıgil was referred to as Büyük Ali ( Turkish for The Great Ali ) and Soydan as Küçük Ali , as was common in Turkish football in such cases at the time . With this name he was then also referred to by fans and the press during player times. With the Turkish national team he took part in the 1954 World Cup, but was not used during this tournament. He was distinguished by his versatility and played successfully in all positions except the goalkeeper position during his career.

Beratlıgil was born in the Turkish port city of İzmit in 1931. Here he began as a 15-year-old in the youth of the local amateur club Izmit Kâğıtspor with club football. At the age of 17 he became part of the men's team. After having been active here for three years, he moved to the traditional Istanbul club Galatasaray Istanbul in the summer of 1951 . At that time, there was no national professional league in Turkey. Instead, regional leagues existed in metropolitan areas such as Istanbul , Ankara and Izmir , of which the league, renamed İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi ( Turkish for Istanbul professional league ) in 1952, was considered the most prestigious. Galatasaray, along with its big city rivals Beşiktaş Istanbul and Fenerbahçe Istanbul, was a constant favorite for the league's championship title. Moved to Galatasaray, Beratlıgil was initially only on the bench and was only involved in training by the English coach Donald Lockhead . In the current season of the Istanbul professional league, the 1952 season, he only made the debut for his new team on the 9th match day in the game against Vefa Istanbul . With this encounter Beratlıgil conquered a regular place and completed all six remaining games of his team by the end of the season. The season ended the red-yellow behind Beşiktaş as runner-up. The new season started again with Lockhead, but this coach was replaced after the 4th game day by the former player legend and long-time team captain of the club, Gündüz Kılıç . Kılıç had ended his football career at the end of the previous season and then took over the coaching position with the reserve team of the club. Under his team captain of the previous season Beratlıgil kept his regular place and was used in 16 of the 18 possible league matches.

After you missed the championship in the season 1952/53, you replaced Kılıç by the Hungarian coach László Székely . Even under this coach, Beratlıgil remained an undisputed regular player and became one of the best right-backs in the league. The then coach of the Turkish national team , the Italian Sandro Puppo , noticed the youngster and nominated him for the Mediterranean Cup match against the second selection of the Italian national team , then also known as Italy B , on December 11, 1953. Matchday of the 1953/54 season replaced by predecessor Gündüz Kılıç . Under Kılıç Beratlıgil, who was previously always active in the position of right-back or defensive midfielder, was used as a striker . In this position he formed a dangerous trio with Kadri Aytaç and Suat Mamat . Galatasaray missed the championship at the end of the season 1953/54 and was again runner-up behind Beşiktaş. In the next season, the season 1954/55, Beratlıgil played on the striker position and advanced to one of the best strikers in the league. He finished the season with 15 goals as the top scorer in the league and also formed the most accurate offensive of the season with his strike partners Aytaç and Mamat. With his goals, he played a key role in ensuring that Galatasaray ended the season with the championship of the Istanbul professional league and won the trophy for the first time in the club's history. In the following season, Metin Oktay, a then unknown young striker who was later to become one of the most important players in Turkish football, joined the team. With Metin Oktay, Suat Mamat, İsfendiyar Açıksöz , Kadri Aytaç and Güngör Okay , Beratlıgil was to form an offensive team that would be legendary for both Galatasaray and Turkish football. After the acquisition of Oktay, Beratlıgil had to give up the forward position to him and from then on played in the offensive midfield. With Oktay as the new center forward, the title was defended in the 1955/56 season. Beratlıgil was one of his team's most successful goalscorers, five goals behind Oktay, who became the league's top scorer with 19 goals.

In the 1956/57 season Galatasaray failed to defend the title and they only reached the runner-up. Although they had the same number of points with the champions Fenerbahçe, the arch-rival decided the championship with the better goal difference. Beratlıgil was one of the top performers of his team during this season. The missed championship caused a dissatisfaction between the club management and the successful coach and creator of the team Gündüz Kılıç . After a dispute between the two parties, Kılıç, who was very much appreciated by his players, separated from the club and was replaced a little later by Musa Sezer . With this coach and from December 1957 with the British George Dick , Galatasaray again reached the championship of the league at the end of the season. Beratlıgil under this coach no longer one of the undisputed players and completed eleven of the possible 18 league games. Like many players in the championship, Beratlıgil expressed thoughts of emigration.

In the summer of 1958, Beratlıgil first negotiated with İstanbulspor and came to an agreement with this team. Galatasaray did not agree to this move, so Beratlıgil began preparing for the season at Galatasaray. Here he fell out with the trainer and left the training camp without notice. After these developments, Galatasaray put it up for sale and demanded a transfer fee of 25,000 Turkish lira. So he left his long-term club and moved to city and league competitor Adalet SK . At his new club, he made it straight to the top team and a little later became one of the top performers on his team. From the spring of 1959 he took part with Adalet in the newly founded and nationwide Millî Lig , now the Süper Lig. Up to this point in time, there was no national league in Turkey, but regional leagues existed in the larger metropolitan areas. Of these regional leagues, the most famous was the İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi (German: Istanbul Professional League). The first season was played from February 1959 to June 1959 and ended with the championship of Fenerbahçe Istanbul . Adalet was far behind the top of the table in the last place in the red group . Beratlıgil had a mixed season and was put on the sales list by his club at the end of the season.

For the second season of the Millî Lig, the 1959/60 season , he moved within the league to city rivals İstanbulspor . For this club he played the following two years. After he remained without a club for the 1961/62 season, he played for Feriköy SK for a year in the 1962/63 season . After his work he moved to the Istanbul second division club Eyüpspor . He played one more season for this club and then ended his active football career in the summer of 1965.

National team

Beratlıgil first played for the Turkish national team at the age of twenty-two while at Galatasaray Istanbul. Moved to Galatasaray in 1951, he performed well in the position of right-back and was one of the most noticeable players in the league. National coach Sandro Puppo nominated him for the Mediterranean Cup meeting on December 11, 1953 against the second selection of the Italian national team . Beratlıgil played in this game from the start and made his international debut.

As the next national match nomination, he was appointed to the squad of Turkey for the 1954 World Cup . At the end of the group stage, they finished second in the table, tied with the German selection . Although they had the better goal difference, according to the rules of the time, the group runners-up was decided by a playoff between these two teams. Germany decided this encounter 7-2 for themselves. Due to the great competition at the time on the defensive playing positions, Beratlıgil did not play a game during the tournament.

After the 1954 World Cup , Beratlıgil was no longer considered for the national team for two years. At the end of 1954 he was nominated once under the new national coach Gündüz Kılıç , but did not play a game with this nomination.

It was not until February 1956 that he was nominated again for the national team under national coach Giovanni Varglien . As part of this nomination, the Turkish national team played a friendly against the Hungarian national team in front of a home crowd on February 19, 1956 . Turkey managed a 3-1 victory against the then known as the Golden Elf and consisting of players such as Ferenc Puskás , Gyula Grosics , József Bozsik , Sándor Kocsis and Nándor Hidegkuti . Beratlıgil played the entire length.

The next two years Beratlıgil was nominated frequently for the national team and completed four more internationals. He made his last international match on December 8, 1957 during a friendly against the Belgian national team .

In addition to his work for the regular national team, he also played a few times for the Turkish military national team.

Coaching career

After the end of his playing career, Beratlıgil took over various activities at Galatasaray and the Turkish Football Association . UA he worked for Galatasaray as the director of the Ali Sami Yen Stadium .

In 1967 he decided to switch to coaching, and his first job was to take on the position of head coach at the then second division team Samsunspor . With this club he reached the runner-up in the 2nd Lig at the end of the season and thus missed direct promotion to the 1st Lig .

After a season Beratlıgil left Samsunspor and took over the third division club Tarsus İdman Yurdu . He led this team at the end of the season to the third division championship and thus achieved promotion to the 2nd league. After he started the new season at Tarsus IY, he left this club during the season.

For the 1971/72 season he took over the Istanbul second division side Sarıyer SK . He left this club within his first season. He then worked as a trainer at Feriköy SK and resigned from his position in November 1973.

For the season 1975/76 Beratlıgil worked for the third division club Çanakkalespor as head coach. He resigned from this office after a few months and took over his old club Tarsus İdman Yurdu .

In the following years he worked repeatedly, with major interruptions, at various clubs. In 1983 he took over the coaching position at the amateur club Camialtı SK .
