Lawrence Rabiner

Lawrence R. Rabiner (born September 28, 1943 in Brooklyn ) is an American computer scientist and electrical engineer who deals with digital signal processing , automatic speech synthesis and speech recognition.

Rabiner studied electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a bachelor 's and master' s degree in 1964 and a doctorate in 1967. He then went to Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, where he became department head in 1985, director in 1990 and vice president in 1995. In 1989 he became a Fellow of Bell Labs. After the split in 1996, he was at AT&T Labs , where he served as director of the speech and image processing laboratory. In 1998 he became AT&T Labs Vice President, Research, and in 2002 he retired. He then taught at Rutgers University and at the same time at the University of California, Santa Barbara .

Some algorithms for digital filtering and digital spectral analysis such as the Chirp z-Transform (1969) and various methods for the synthesis of FIR (with methods of linear programming and Chebyshev filters ) come from him.

He applied hidden Markov model methods in speech recognition and developed one of the first devices for digital speech synthesis with any text input. The voice recognition systems he developed at AT&T, such as VRCP ( Voice Recognition Call Processing ), enabled the company to save hundreds of millions of dollars a year by saving operator operators.

In 1980 he received the IEEE Emanuel R. Piore Award with Ronald W. Schafer and in 1999 the IEEE Jack S. Kilby Signal Processing Medal . In 1999 he received the IEEE Millennium Medal and in 1984 the IEEE Centennial Award. He is an IEEE Fellow (1976) and a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America . In 1983 he became a member of the National Academy of Engineering and in 1990 the National Academy of Sciences . He was President of the IEEE Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing Society and Vice President of the Acoustical Society of America . He was editor of ASSP Transactions and served on the editorial board of IEEE Proceedings .
