The USSR team played strong in Group C and came first ahead of the French. A furious start against the disappointing Hungarians (6: 0) was followed by a cautious 1: 1 against France and with a reserve eleven a 2: 0 against the debutants Canada. Hungary defeated Canada 2-0, but had no chance against France at 3-0 and had to travel home together with Canada after the preliminary round.

For Hungary it was the last participation in a major football tournament until 2016. Despite the increase in the number of participants, the Hungarian team was unable to qualify for another World Cup or a European Football Championship for three decades . That only succeeded again in 2016 at the EM.
