Iraq qualified for a soccer World Cup for the first time .
Group stage
The Iraqi team met Qatar , Jordan and Lebanon in the first qualifying round , after the withdrawal of the Lebanese the four became a group of three, the games of the Iraqis against Lebanon (both ended with a 6-0 win by Iraq) were not counted more. Due to the First Gulf War , the Iraqi team played their home games in Kuwait City and Calcutta ( India ).

In the semifinals, Iraq met the national soccer team of the United Arab Emirates and qualified for the final due to the away goals rule . After a goalless draw in Damascus , Iraq won the second leg in the Saudi Arabian Taif and qualified for the World Cup in Mexico as winners of the West Asian group.

Iraq met hosts Mexico , Paraguay and Belgium in the preliminary round . Although the Iraqis lost all group games, they were able to keep all games open and each lost by only one goal difference.
