Although Brazil remained the winners of Group D without conceding, the successes over Spain (1-0) and above all against Algeria (1-0) and Northern Ireland (3-0) were not very exciting. Spain, second in the group, did not tear down any trees either. Butragueno & Co. struggled to defeat Northern Ireland (2-1) and, more clearly, the declining Algerians (3-0). Algeria and Northern Ireland drew 1-1 in a weak game and were eliminated.

Denmark was disenchanted by the Spaniards 5-1 (four goals from Butragueño).
Quarter finals
45,000 | Estadio Cuauhtémoc ( Puebla ) | Belgium | Spain | Cherries ( GDR ) | 6: 5 n.e. (1: 1, 1: 0) | 1-0 Ceulemans (35.) 1: 1 Señor (85.) Penalty: Señor hit Claesen hit Eloy kept Scifo hit Chendo hit Broos hit Butragueño hit Vervoort hit Víctor Muñoz hit Van der Elst hit |
Spain and Belgium also found the winner on penalties. Ceulemans (34th) and Señor (85th) scored the goals before the goalless extra time. Except for Eloy's penalty ( Jean-Marie Pfaff held the ball), all the shooters converted their penalty. Surprisingly, the Belgians made it through to the semi-finals, while the Spaniards started their journey home with their star striker Butragueño, who was disappointing that day.
