Franky Van der Elst (born April 30, 1961 in Ninove ) is a former Belgian football player and current coach .
Career
Van der Elst began his active career at RWD Molenbeek before moving to Club Brugge in 1984 and ending his career there in 1999. Here he won five championships (1988, 1990, 1992, 1996, 1998) and four times the state cup (1986, 1991, 1995, 1996). The defensive midfielder took part in four world championships for the Belgian national team between 1986 and 1998 , with 14 appearances. He made a total of 86 international matches for his country (1 goal). Van der Elst was then from 1999 to 2003 coach at Germinal Beerschot , and 2003/04 at SK Lokeren . In September 2011 he took over the coaching position at VV Sint-Truiden . From 2014 to 2016 he coached KSV Roeselare .
Under Gert Verheyen he was assistant coach for the Belgian U19 national soccer team from 2016 . When he moved to KV Ostend in the summer of 2018, he joined as an assistant coach. Even under his successor Hugo Broos, he remained co-trainer at KV Ostend. After Broos was dismissed from Ostend on April 29, 2019 due to the standings, Van der Elst took over the job of coach until the end of the season. After signing Kåre Ingebrigtsen as the new coach in the 2019/20 season, Van der Elst is again working as an assistant coach for Ostend.
1982 was not Franky Van der Elst, but François Van der Elst World Cup participant and came to two missions.
He was selected by Pelé in the FIFA 100 list of the 125 best footballers still alive.
