Paul Okon (born April 5, 1972 in Sydney ) is a former Australian soccer player and current soccer coach .
career
society
Okon began his career in his homeland, Australia, with the Marconi Stallions . At the age of nineteen he was discovered and signed by Club Brugge in 1991 . There he quickly established himself as a regular player and celebrated his first title win as Belgian champion in 1992. In 1995 he became Belgium's first non-European footballer of the year . After his second title in 1996, which was accompanied by winning the Belgian Cup, he left Belgium and went to Lazio in the Serie A . In the same year he was named Oceania's Footballer of the Year .
Due to knee problems, however, Okon hardly got a chance at Lazio and only made 19 appearances in three seasons. Therefore, his participation in the cup win and the subsequent success in the historically last European Cup Winners' Cup was only small. In 1999 he joined Fiorentina , before moving to England for Middlesbrough FC after just one year , where he was retired under Steve McClaren in the middle of the 2001/02 season and loaned to Watford FC . In 2003 he joined Leeds United before returning to Italy and hired by Vicenza Calcio .
In 2004 Okon moved to Belgium for KV Ostend , where he was a regular player. After a season he moved to APOEL Nicosia . With the club he failed in the first round of the UEFA Cup to Hertha BSC .
In 2006 Okon returned to Australia and played for the Newcastle United Jets . In 2007 he ended his career due to an injury.
National team
1991 Okon took part with the Australian U20 selection in the Junior World Championship. A year later he was part of the team that took part in the 1992 Olympic Games .
In 1993 he made his debut for Australia's senior team . Up until 2003 he played 29 times for his country, sometimes as team captain .
