Gilles De Bilde (born June 9, 1971 in Zellik ) is a former Belgian football player .

Career

society

The 1.80 m tall offensive player played in his youth at Zellik Sport in his hometown, interrupted by a short time at RSC Anderlecht from 1984 to 1985. He played his first appearances in the men's area for the KHO Merchtem club, for which he started in 1989 was active. In 1992 he moved to Eendracht Aalst in the second Belgian league and became a professional. In 1994 he was promoted to the First Division with his club . He soon developed into a goalscorer in the Belgian first division and was also voted Belgium's Footballer of the Year in 1994. From 1995 to 1997 he was active for RSC Anderlecht. He also played very successfully there and was popular with the fans. They gave him the nickname “de ket” (the chain).

The successful time in Anderlecht ended abruptly: De Bilde had hit his opponent Krist Porte in the face in a league game against his ex-club Eendracht Aalst in December 1996 . The referee hadn't seen the assault. Porte was not able to play a game for a long time because of the injuries suffered (fracture of the eye socket, nose and jaw). In addition to fines, de Bilde was banned from the Belgian Football Association for three months.

De Bild's reputation in Belgium was accordingly. Therefore, he moved to the Dutch first division PSV Eindhoven during the 1996/97 season . In the rest of the season he scored seven goals in eight games for Eindhoven. At the end of the season, his club became champions in the Eredivisie. In the 1997/98 season de Bilde was successful with 13 goals in the league. He also made his first appearances in the UEFA Champions League (97/98: 6 games, 3 goals). PSV Eindhoven finished second in the league. His partner in the attack was often his compatriot Luc Nilis . In the following season, de Bilde lost his regular place and went to Sheffield Wednesday in the 1999/2000 season in the Premier League . After a season that was personally satisfactory for him (38 games, 10 goals and thus the most successful goalscorer internally), which ended with the relegation of his club, he was loaned to Aston Villa , which he stayed in the first division. Here he met Luc Nilis again, who (due to an injury), like de Bilde, played only a few games (3). De Bilde made four appearances (no goal) and went back to Sheffield Wednesday during the season. Until his departure in 2001, however, he only got three goals and Sheffield was far from being promoted again. He had a difficult relationship with the fans of Sheffield Wednesday, as he did not always perform as the fans expected him to be. Nevertheless, he was one of the "high earners" in the team.

In 2001 he went back to Belgium and signed a contract with RSC Anderlecht. In the first division he then played at SK Lierse (2003-2004). He then moved to Spain and a year later made a comeback in Belgium with the amateur club KVC Willebroek-Meerhof (2005-2007).

National team

In 1994 he made his debut for the Belgian national team. His national team career was interrupted by the incident in December 1996. In June 1997 he played again for the "Red Devils" for the first time. At first there was some hostility from the fans, which De Bilde endured and which waned over time. By 2000 he had a total of 25 international matches (two goals). He took part with the national team in the EM 2000 held in Belgium and the Netherlands . De Bilde went to work there; the team was eliminated in the preliminary round.
