Gold Coast United was a football franchise from the east Australian city of Gold Coast in the state of Queensland , which competed in the A-League from 2009 to 2012 . The owner was the billionaire Clive Palmer , whose fortune is based on coal mining.

history

For the 2008/09 season there was the first consortium from Gold Coast, which applied under the working title Gold Coast Galaxy FC for an A-League license. The application was well advanced - there were already several players and the coach Miron Bleiberg under contract - when the association rejected the application in March 2008. Reasons for this were among other things the problems of the competitor North Queensland Thunder and the general rejection of a league with nine teams.

For the following season, the Australian association had a total of ten applications, including two from Gold Coast. In addition to a renewed application by the Galaxy Consortium, there was also a competing project led by billionaire Clive Palmer, which was ultimately awarded the contract.

On February 29, 2012, the club's license was suspended. Official reasons are violations of the franchise agreements with the association, the Football Federation Australia (FFA). During the period there were ongoing clashes between the association and Gold Coast United, which also resulted in personal attacks between the association chairman, mall billionaire Frank Lowy and the club owner. For the last four games of the season, the team was under the direction of the FFA, at the end of the season the team was dissolved and the Western Sydney Wanderers added as a new team in the A-League.
