Brett Emerton (born February 22, 1979 in Bankstown in the south-west of Sydney ) is a former Australian football player who was most recently under contract with the Australian first division club Sydney FC .

Career

The midfielder began his professional career in 1997 at Sydney Olympic in Australia and then moved to Feyenoord Rotterdam in the Netherlands at the beginning of the 2000/01 season and played in the honor division . Here he developed and eventually moved to Blackburn, where he signed in 2003. At Blackburn Rovers , he played over 200 games until he moved to his home country, the A-League , to Sydney FC in August 2011 and signed a three-year contract.

National team

Emerton played 95 times for the Australian national soccer team and took part in the 2005 Confederations Cup , the 2006 Soccer World Cup and the 2010 Soccer World Cup. In 2002 he was named Oceania's Footballer of the Year . After goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer (102 caps) and Lucas Neill (96 caps), he is the player with the third most caps for Australia. He played his last international game on December 9, 2012 in an 8-0 win over Taiwan.

On January 16, 2014, he announced the end of his career due to injury.
