Career
In the club
Verheyen played in his youth at Hoogstraten VV and began his professional career at Lierse SK , where he moved in 1986. In 1988 he went to RSC Anderlecht . In 1991 he became Belgian champions with the club. A year later he joined Club Bruges , to which he remained loyal for 14 years. He was part of the squad at the 1998 and 2002 World Championships and at the 2000 European Championships . After the 2002 World Cup, he announced his resignation from the national team.
Trainer
After his career ended, Verheyen was coach of the reserve team of Club Bruges in 2006. In the summer of 2007 he gave up this job because he opened a clothing store.
In March 2013 he accepted an offer from the Belgian Football Association to coach the U18 / U19 national team from summer 2013 . In summer 2018 he moved from there to KV Ostend .
After it was determined that Ostend could no longer reach the championship play-offs in the 2018/19 season , Verheyen was dismissed as coach on March 6, 2019.
