Hoogstraten is the northernmost municipality in Belgium . It is located in the Flanders region, has 21,355 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) and has city rights. The districts of Hoogstraten , Meer , Meerle , Minderhout and Wortel belong to the city .
location
Hoogstraten is located in the north of Belgium and borders directly on the Netherlands on three sides . The northernmost point of Belgium is in the small town of Dreef . Turnhout is 15 kilometers (km) south-east, the Dutch city of Breda 20 km north, Antwerp 30 km south-west and Brussels approx. 67 km south-south-west.
Infrastructure
The nearest motorway exits are at Loenhout and Meer on the Belgian A1 / E 19 motorway , which connects Antwerp with the Dutch cities of Breda and Rotterdam . The nearest regional train stations are in
Turnhout and Kalmthout .
The Antwerp International Airport and the airports of Rotterdam and Eindhoven are the next regional airports and the airport Brussels National near the capital Brussels is an airport of international importance.
Attractions
- The late Gothic Sint-Catharinakerk (Saint Catherine's Church) from the 14th century has one of the highest church towers in Belgium with its almost 105 meter high tower .
- The beguinage was built around 1380 and consists of 36 houses and a baroque church. Since 1998 it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage “Flemish Beguinages”.

- Every second weekend in August, the Antilliaanse Feesten , an Afro-Caribbean open-air festival, takes place not far from Hoogstraten .
