Kwame Hasani Brown (born March 10, 1982 in Charleston , South Carolina ) is a retired American basketball player who was active in the NBA from 2001 to 2013 , most recently with the Philadelphia 76ers . It was used as a center with a height of 2.11 meters.

Brown was selected as number 1 in the 2001 NBA Draft straight out of high school by the Washington Wizards team, for which he was active from 2001 to August 2005. However, he could never live up to the great expectations. His selection is considered to be one of the biggest mistakes in draft history.

Career

High school

Brown was named High School Player of the Year in his senior year at Glynn Academy in Georgia and was named to the All-American National Team. He holds his school's records for the most rebounds and blocked throws, and has collected the second most points.

NBA

Washington Wizards

After the Washington Wizards had surprisingly signed Brown out of high school with their No. 1 draft ticket, the young player was under enormous pressure of expectation. Brown became the first player in NBA history to be selected straight out of high school as No. 1 in the draft without ever having played in college . This succeeded then still two other players ( LeBron James and Dwight Howard ), before 2005 the rules were changed, from when a player is eligible to play for the NBA. The former basketball superstar Michael Jordan was President of the Washington Wizards at the time and, after a comeback, from 2001 to 2003 even his teammate. As a result, he had a major influence on this controversial decision and thus increased public expectations of Brown and the team.

In Brown's first year in the NBA 2001-2002 , he played mostly on the position of power forward , fell short of general expectations and scored only 4.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game, which was particularly criticized by the media.

In his second season he was able to increase to 7.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per game and was in the starting line-up in 20 games (as a so-called starter ). In his third year, Brown got 10.9 points and 7.4 rebounds per game after another slight improvement and he played in 57 games as a starter. In a game against the Sacramento Kings , he even achieved his previous career record of 30 points and 12 rebounds. Still, the Wizards could never qualify for the NBA playoffs in those years .

After his original contract threatened to expire, Brown declined an early contract extension for another 5 years for about 30 million dollars with the Wizards. In his fourth season 2004-2005 he was injured often, played only in about half of all season games and scored only 7.0 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. He also got increasingly into disputes with teammates (especially the new star of the team Gilbert Arenas ) and his coach, which made him unpopular with the press and fans. That season the Wizards finally made it back to the playoffs but were eliminated in the second round by the Miami Heat and Brown played little after receiving a misconduct penalty.

Los Angeles Lakers

On August 2, 2005, Kwame Brown moved together with Laron Profit from Washington in exchange for Caron Butler and Chucky Atkins to the West Coast to the Los Angeles Lakers. At the beginning of the new season he continued to show a rather poor performance there and only scored about 6 points and 6 rebounds per game. He also lost the first away game against his former team and, as expected, was booed by the fans. After the actual center of the LA Lakers Chris Mihm was seriously injured in March 2006, Brown was the new starting player in this position and improved his game statistics significantly as a result. Los Angeles reached the playoffs in 2006, where he started in all 7 games in a competitive series against the Phoenix Suns , scoring 90 points and 46 rebounds (the Lakers were still eliminated).

In the 2006-2007 season Brown played again on the center position in the starting line-up, but was injured for some games. Nevertheless, he stabilized his quota at over 8 points and 6 rebounds per game and achieved the best average of blocked throws in his NBA career. The Los Angeles Lakers reached the playoffs again and met the Phoenix Suns again in the first round. In the only win in this game series, Brown achieved his season high of 19 points, but the Lakers were eliminated after five games 1 to 4 against the Suns, who were clearly superior this time.

Memphis grizzlies

On February 1, 2008 he was transferred to the Grizzlies for Pau Gasol along with Javaris Crittenton and Aaron McKie .

Detroit Pistons

On July 28, 2008, it was announced that the Detroit Pistons had given Brown a two-year contract for $ 8 million. The second year was a player option.

Charlotte Bobcats

On August 23, 2010, Brow agreed on a one-year contract with the Charlotte Bobcats . His annual salary that season was $ 1.3 million.

Golden State Warriors

After the NBA lockout ended early in the season, Brown signed a one-year contract with the Golden State Warriors .

Milwaukee Bucks

March 2012 Brown and Monta Ellis from the Warriors were given to the Milwaukee Bucks .

Philadelphia 76ers

After his contract with the Bucks expired, Brown signed a two-year contract with the Philadelphia 76ers . Over the 2 years his total salary is $ 6 million. However, his contract was terminated on November 20, 2013 by the Sixers.
