Bornem is a municipality in the Mechelen district of the Belgian province of Antwerp and has 21,366 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019). The municipality is located on the right bank of the Scheldt opposite the municipality of Temse , with which Bornem is connected by a bridge that is part of the national road N16. The municipality includes the villages of Mariekerke, Weert, Hingene, Wintam and Eikevliet. Bornem extends over an area of 45.76 km² and thus has a population density of 467 inhabitants / km².
Sights and events
There are many attractions in Bornem, such as the neo-Gothic castle by Marnix van Sint-Aldegonde, built in 1888, and the Cistercian Abbey of St. Bernhard (built 1666), which is known for its library of more than 40,000 books. You can visit the former fortress from the defensive line of Antwerp in Bornem . The picturesque dykes along the Scheldt offer many opportunities for walkers and cyclists.
Every year in August, the Dodentocht takes place, a 100 km march in and around Bornem.
Location and infrastructure
The next motorway exits are in the east at Mechelen on the A1 / E 19 and at Sint-Niklaas in the west on the A14 / E 17 . The municipality has a regional train station on the Sint-Niklaas – Puurs – Mechelen line. The Antwerp International Airport is the nearest regional airport and Brussels-Zaventem close to the capital is an international airport.
