Dodentocht
The Dodentocht , also known as the skull march, is a 100 km hike that takes place in the Belgian municipality of Bornem and the surrounding area. The march takes place annually in August.

The Dodentocht is celebrated like a folk festival in Bornem and the surrounding area . Every year more than 10,000 hikers and runners take part in the march. Depending on the weather, the success rate is 40–60%.

The goal is to hike 100 km within 24 hours. A placement does not take place because the motivation of the dodentoch is not the quick achievement of the goal, but the achievement in itself.
The distances between the stations decrease towards the goal. The march begins at 9:00 p.m. in Bornem and officially ends at 9:00 p.m. in Bornem, but unofficially the march does not end until 9:30 p.m., because with the large number of participants, the last ones cross the starting line about 30 minutes after the starting gun . Otherwise you would “steal” 30 minutes of the permitted 24 hours from the rear starters.

When reaching the goal, you traditionally received a pineapple as refreshment and a bottle of local beer, but the pineapple was replaced by a gladiolus in 2011 .
