history

Antwerp Airport 2019

The airport was first opened in 1923 as a military airfield for Aviation Militaire Belge . The construction of the first passenger terminal began in 1929, which was opened in 1930.

During the German occupation during World War II , the airport was significantly enlarged and used by the Air Force .

The following table shows a list of selected active flying units (excluding school and supplementary units) of the Wehrmacht Air Force that were stationed here between 1940 and 1944.

From To unit
May 1940 May 1940 Staff / JG 51 (staff of Jagdgeschwader 51)
June 1940 March 1941 II./KG 3 (II. Group of Kampfgeschwader 3)
June 1940 June 1940 III./KG 4
September 1944 September 1944 I./JG 4

The Royal Air Force initially continued to use the airfield , which it called Airfield B.52 , after the area was liberated from the Germans during the war.

Civil aviation was resumed in 1946. With the advent of passenger aircraft in the early 1960s, the volume of traffic initially subsided and there was a threat of closure. In the end, however, operations could continue and the buildings and taxiways were even expanded in the following decades.

After the attack at Brussels-Zaventem Airport, Antwerp Airport was temporarily used as an alternate airport for a number of medium- haul flights by Brussels Airlines as long as the repair work in the terminal of Brussels Airport was ongoing .

LEM (Luchthaven Exploitatie Maatschappij) Antwerpen NV , a subsidiary of the French infrastructure company Egis , has been the airport operator since October 27, 2014 and has a concession in this regard for 25 years.

Airlines & Destinations

There are direct flights to the airport from Germany and Switzerland. As of June 2018, scheduled flights from Antwerp to Aberdeen , Birmingham , London (City) , Maribor via Munich , Rostock-Laage via Cologne / Bonn and Zurich will be operated by VLM Airlines . As of September 16, only the routes to London (City) and Zurich will remain in place. TUI Airlines Belgium flies to several holiday destinations.

As a German-speaking charter destination, Innsbruck has been served by Welcome Air in recent years . The connection has been served by TUI Airlines Belgium since 2017. The connection to Manchester with bmi regional was discontinued in November 2013. In addition, for reasons of the short runway, environmental protection and competition from other means of transport and airports, mainly charter and private planes land.
