Flybmi ( spelling : flybmi , previously also bmi regional ) was the brand name of the former Scottish regional airline British Midland Regional Limited , headquartered in Paisley at Glasgow Airport . On February 16, 2019, the company filed for bankruptcy and ceased operations. As a reason, flybmi u. a. Uncertainties resulting from the planned exit of Great Britain from the European Union .
The airline's base of operations and control room were located at Aberdeen International Airport . The main office was at East Midlands Airport in North West Leicestershire . Flybmi was a subsidiary of British Midland Airways until May 2012 and has since operated independently under the new owner Airline Investments Limited (AIL) , a holding owned by the brothers Peter and Stephen Bond, who also belongs to Loganair .
history
The airline was founded as Business Air in 1987 and began operating in August 1987. In 2001, it changed its name to British Midland Regional . In March 2008, bmi regional received the award as the most punctual scheduled airline in Great Britain.
Until October 2009 Michael David Bishop held 50%, Lufthansa 30% and SAS Scandinavian Airlines 20% in bmi regional , then the Lufthansa Group also took over Michael Bishop's shares as part of the takeover of the parent company British Midland Airways ( bmi ) So with 80% of the shares to the majority owner of the bmi regional .
At the end of October 2011 it was announced that Lufthansa was holding advanced talks on the sale of bmi regional (independent of bmi ) to British investors . In May 2012 the sale of bmi regional to Sector Aviation Holdings Limited for an amount of £ 8 million was announced.
In September 2012, in addition to a new website and the new IATA code BM , a revised logo was presented and the addition of new flight routes was announced.
In December 2012, new routes from Bristol to Hamburg and from Bristol to Frankfurt am Main were announced. Hamburg was then served twice a day for six days from the end of April, Frankfurt initially once. At the beginning of February 2013 it was announced that BMI Regional would take over the Bremen - Toulouse route of the insolvent OLT Express Germany. The Bremen - Toulouse route was discontinued at the end of October 2017. In mid-February 2013, three more routes from Bristol to Hanover, Munich and Milan were announced. The routes from Hanover and Munich were served six times a week. At the same time it was announced that the Bristol - Frankfurt route would now be served twice a day, six days a week.
A renaming of the company was announced for 2014, from then on it was called bmi ; the former parent company, which has since been dissolved and for which one owned the trademark rights.
At the end of October 2013, the airline announced the closure of its bases in Birmingham, Edinburgh and Manchester and the cancellation of five routes. From then on, the focus was on the bases in Aberdeen and Bristol.
In April 2015, Sector Aviation Holdings , the previous parent company of bmi regional , was bought by the Bond brothers' Airline Investment Holdings .
On February 16, 2019, it was announced that the airline will cease operations with immediate effect. Excessive operating costs and the approaching Brexit were named as reasons .
Destinations
Flybmi only served destinations within Europe. These include Aberdeen , Bergamo , Bristol , Brussels , East Midlands , Esbjerg , Jönköping , Karlstad , Norrköping , Brno , Nantes , Toulouse , Oslo , Rotterdam and Southampton . In Germany, there were flights to Bremen , Düsseldorf , Frankfurt , Hamburg , Munich , Rostock and Saarbrücken . Graz Airport was served in Austria .
As the operating carrier for some flights from German destinations, Flybmi was also Lufthansa's code- sharing partner . That meant z. B. that the bmi regional - scheduled flight with the flight number BM1846 from Munich to Bristol was offered in parallel also on the Lufthansa flight number LH5310. In addition, there was close cooperation with the Lufthansa subsidiary Brussels Airlines . The Brussels Airlines flights from Brussels to Edinburgh , Belfast , Manchester , Birmingham , Bristol , Nantes and London were sold as "bmi regional operated by Brussels Airlines".
The bmi Flybmi hubs were Munich , Frankfurt , Brussels and Bristol . The first two were also specifically designated as transfer airports. Also Brussels was a transfer airport - especially for connecting to that of Brussels Airlines routes operated (joint connections). Bristol owned most of the connections through bmi regional , but unlike Frankfurt and Munich, no transfer tickets could be booked via this airport.
From February 27, 2017, Flybmi flew from Birmingham to Graz . In addition, from May 2017, Nuremberg Airport was served six times a week from Birmingham .
The connection established in March 2015 between Bern-Belp Airport and Munich Airport was discontinued on December 26, 2016 due to a lack of profitability.
In January 2019, the connection between Stuttgart Airport and Rostock-Laage Airport was discontinued due to the upcoming Brexit, even before the entire airline went bankrupt in February of the same year.
