Eddy Pauwels (born May 2, 1935 in Bornem , Belgium ; † March 6, 2017 there ) was a Belgian racing cyclist .

Athletic career

In 1954 Pauwels stood on the podium for the first time in a stage race when he achieved third place on the third stage of the Belgian 7-stage amateur race "Omloop negen Provincies". In the overall standings, he finally came in 13th. He achieved his most significant success as an amateur when he won the GDR tour in 1957 , when he competed for the Amsterdam suburb club WAC Hoboken.

In 1958 Pauwels switched to the professional camp , where he signed a contract with the Belgian team Libertas. He achieved his first victory as a professional rider in the same year at a criterion in the Belgian Oppuurs. Already in his second professional year in 1959, Pauwels took part in the Tour de France , where he rode in the yellow jersey of the overall leader on two stages and finally came eleventh. He competed eight times in the Tour de France and achieved his best result in 1961 with ninth place and two stage wins. In 1963 (13th) he drove on three stages in yellow, in 1962 he was awarded the red number for the most aggressive driver. In his eight participations, he won five stages. Pauwels was able to place twice in the Tour of Spain , in 1962 he was ninth, in 1965 he was 18th.

Pauwels participated eleven times between 1959 and 1962 in the races of the monuments of cycling , where he took part in four of the five events. He was most successful at Liège – Bastogne – Liège . There he competed four times from 1959 to 1964 and in 1964 achieved the best result of his monument races with 22nd place. He also started four times at Paris – Roubaix , three times at the Tour of Flanders and once at Milan – Sanremo . He was only missing from the Lombardy tour .

His last victory in a professional race was achieved by Pauwels in 1964 in a criterion in Beaulac-Bernos, France. In 1965 he contested his last big races with the Tour de France and the Tour of Spain. Pauwels ended his professional career in 1966 with the Belgian cycling team Wiel's-Gancia-Groene Leeuw.
