The Cistercian Abbey Bornem (Latin Abbatia BMV loci Sancti Bernardi ; Flemish: Cistercian-Abdij Sint-Bernardus ) is a monastery since 1832 Cistercian in Bornem , province of Antwerp , Roman Catholic Diocese of Antwerp in Belgium .

history

Bornem Monastery, foundation of Pedro Coloma von Bornem (1586–1621), was founded in 1603 by the Order of the Holy Cross , passed to the Dominicans in 1658 and was confiscated in 1797 by the French Revolution .

In 1833, the surviving monks of the Hemiksem monastery , which had also been closed, moved to the empty Bornem monastery 20 kilometers away, as the new beginning at the old location was not sustainable, the building of which they initially leased from the Storms family. In 1835 Franciscus Corselis, Vicar General of the Diocese of Bruges , as authorized Apostolic Visitator of the monasteries in Belgium, transferred the name and the rights of the former Sint-Bernardusabdij in Hemiksem to the re-establishment in Bornem. In 1836 the monks bought the property.

In 1840 the monks built a neoclassical church, which has also been a parish church since 1956.

In 1844 monks from Bornem repopulated Val-Dieu monastery .
