The Estadio Corregidora is a football stadium in the city of Queretaro in the same Mexican state of Queretaro . The stadium was the venue for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico and has served as the home ground for various teams in the course of its young history. The Querétaro Fútbol Club has been playing its home games here since the beginning of the new millennium .

history

The history of the stadium began in 1982, when the then governor of the state of Querétaro, Rafael Camacho Guzmán, expressed his plan to build a large football stadium in the capital of the same name.

Construction began on March 17, 1983 and was completed on December 31, 1984. The official opening took place on February 5, 1985 when the national teams of Mexico and Poland met. It is the only international match of a Mexican national soccer team in Querétaro and the home team won an impressive 5-0.

The name of the stadium was given in memory of the Mexican national heroine Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez alias La Corregidora , who lived and worked in the city of Querétaro for a long time.

Home of various teams

Because the city of Querétaro has a changing football history - which is due in particular to the longstanding weakness and lack of sporting continuity of the city's two most important clubs (which merged in 1999) - and several clubs moved into the city that attracted a (new) audience here wanted to open up (but none of them were accepted by the public), the stadium has already served as a home ground for a large number of clubs, including five different teams in the Primera División .

Initially, in the 1986/87 season, an "art association" called Cobras de Querétaro, which was only temporarily located in Querétaro, brought first division football to the Estadio La Corregidora. However, the club immediately dismounted and was shipped to the border town of Juarez before the start of the next season .

In the 1989/90 season, the traditional club CF Atlante, who came from the capital, played their home games here. He was also not accepted by the audience, was immediately relegated and returned to Mexico City before the start of the next season .

However, the stadium also got to see first division football in the coming seasons, because the Querétaro Fútbol Club, a true home-grown of the city, played in the first division for four years between 1990/91 and 1993/94.

After their relegation, Tampico-Madero FC moved to Querétaro during the 1994/95 season, where it performed under the name TM Gallos Blancos . Like his two predecessors (Cobras and Atlante) who had come here, he was not accepted by the public and left the city (and the first division) after a year.

Querétaro FC has brought top division football here several times since the 2002/03 season and has been using the stadium as its permanent home base ever since. Strictly speaking, it is no longer the same club that played its home games in the local stadium between 1990 and 1994, because the club of the same name merged in 1999 with the other traditional club in the city, which last appeared under the name Gallos Blancos de la UAQ . The merger project was initially called Querétaro Fútbol Club Gallos Blancos , but is now again abbreviated as Querétaro Fútbol Club and is shown in this form on the club's logo.

Soccer World Cup 1986

At the 1986 World Cup in Mexico , the Estadio La Corregidora was the fixed preliminary round venue for the German national team , which played the following matches:

Because Germany finished the preliminary group in second place, group winners Denmark played their round of 16 at the Estadio La Corregidora. Despite a 1-0 lead by Jesper Olsen, Denmark surprisingly lost 5-1 to Spain. "Matchwinner" was Emilio Butragueño , who scored four goals.
