The reigning world champion Brazil could not convince playfully in group 3. The team won the group, but the 2-0 win against Mexico, the 0-0 win against the Czechoslovaks and the 2-1 win against the Spaniards were miles away from the 58 performance. In addition, Pelé injured himself so badly (muscle tear) after two games that he had to be replaced by the young Amarildo for the rest of the tournament. However, Amarildo did surprisingly well and turned out to be one of the best players in the World Cup. The Czechoslovaks unexpectedly came second behind Brazil, although the Spaniards (with Puskas, Gento and Suarez) were rated higher. As in the whole tournament, the defensive department dominated the CSSR too, with Pluskal, Popluhar and above all Masopust being able to set up an outstanding row of runners.
