Eulogio Martínez Ramiro (born June 11, 1935 in Asunción , Paraguay , † September 30, 1984 in Barcelona ) was a Paraguayan-Spanish football player . He completed eight games for the Spanish national football team from 1959 to 1962 , in which he scored six goals. With Spain he took part in the 1962 World Cup in Chile .
Career
As a youth, Martínez, who was born in Asunción, Paraguay, played at Atlántida Sport Club in his hometown. There he aroused the interest of Club Libertad , one of the top clubs in Paraguay . He played for the club for three years from 1953 to 1956 before moving to FC Barcelona . In the star team around greats like Ladislao Kubala and Sándor Kocsis , Martínez was able to prevail against all expectations and soon became a fixture in Barca's attack. At Barcelona, Martínez, who previously won the Paraguayan championship once, won the Spanish championship and the Copa del Rey twice . On September 24, 1957, he scored the first goal in the newly opened Camp Nou in Barcelona. Barca won the game against a Polish selection 4-2. In the cup game against Atlético Madrid , Martínez scored seven goals at 8-1.
In 1962 Martínez, who played nine international matches (4 goals) for Paraguay in 1954 and 1955 , took part in the World Cup in Chile. Spain was actually one of the contenders for the title , with stars like Enrique Collar , Luis del Sol , Alfredo Di Stéfano and Ferenc Puskás , but as is so often the case in major tournaments, the Iberians fell short of expectations in 1962 and already failed in the group stage. Martínez was allowed to appear for Spain eight times. In those eight games he hit the opponent's goal six times. He also completed a game for Catalonia in 1956 . In the year of the World Cup, Martínez moved from Barcelona to Elche CF , where he recorded 39 games (7 goals) in two years. In 1964 he moved on to Atletico Madrid, where he only played two games in one season and therefore moved on to CE Europe , from where he then moved to Calella, where he ended his career.
After the career
After Martínez ended his career in 1966, he lived for a long time in Calella , a suburb of Barcelona . In 1984 there was a serious car accident in which he was injured so badly that he fell into a coma . After 23 days in a coma, Eulogio Martínez died on September 30, 1984 at the age of only 49.
