The favorites in Group II were clearly the English. The start against Chile (2-0) also went perfectly. The USA (previously 1: 3 against Spain) in the second game were blatant outsiders. Superstar Stan Matthews sat in the stands for the English and should be spared for the Spain game. In one of the biggest World Cup sensations, England lost 1-0 to the USA team (37th, Gaetjens). Since the confused English did not score a goal against Spain in full line-up, but had to accept one through Zarra (49th), Spain was surprisingly group winners.

At the latest after Brazil's 7-1 victory over Sweden, the hosts were the favorites of the final group. With an excellent game, Ademir and his team fascinated the almost 140,000 spectators in the Maracanã Stadium. The Brazilians showed football par excellence like hardly any other team before. Inside strikers Zizinho, Ademir and Jair turned the Swedes upside down. When the Spaniards were also defeated by the hosts 1: 6, the commentators hardly had enough superlatives for the unleashed soccer acrobats from Sugar Loaf Mountain. Meanwhile, the Uruguay team happily cramped through the first two games. Against Spain there was a difficult 2-2, which was only secured late by Valdana's violent shot. The Swedes could only be defeated with the late goal to 3-2 by Miguez (85th). The Scandinavians won the match between Spain and Sweden 3-1, which meant third place in the tournament's final score.
