The favorites in Group II were clearly the English. The start against Chile (2-0) also went perfectly. The USA (previously 1: 3 against Spain) in the second game were blatant outsiders. Superstar Stan Matthews sat in the stands for the English and should be spared for the Spain game. In one of the biggest World Cup sensations, England lost 1-0 to the Americans (37th, Gaetjens). Since the confused English did not score a goal against Spain in full line-up, but had to accept one through Zarra (49th), Spain was surprisingly group winners.
