Group III started with a bang. Sweden defeated the world champions Italy with 3-2 goals. The Scandinavians were not shocked by the early deficit (7th, Carapellese) and then took a 3-1 lead (Jeppson 25th and 69th, and Andersson in the 34th minute). The 2: 3 by Muccinelli (76th) was not enough for the Squadra Azzurra. Italy's disadvantage was that the international Turin players, who had been killed in a plane crash a year earlier, could not be replaced equally. A 2-2 win against Paraguay, which in turn lost against Italy 2-0, was enough for the Swedes to advance.
