At that time, Yugoslavia was known as "the Brazil of the Balkans". The Mexican daily Excélsior described the fact that Mexico was in a group with these two teams as "cruel". For them "Brazil and Yugoslavia were the tigers and Mexico the steak."
Still, Mexico started the game well and controlled it in the early stages. But as the game played, Yugoslavia got the game under control. Stjepan Bobek made it 1-0 after just 20 minutes, and Željko Čajkovski made it 2-0 three minutes later, setting the course for victory early on. The Mexican team did not get more than one honorary goal to make it 1: 4. This fell through a penalty converted by Ortíz, which Mrkusić had owed to "Lupe" Velázquez .

The strangest occurrence happened before kick-off. Because both the Swiss and the Mexicans wore red jerseys - and the jerseys of SC Internacional , which was located in this stadium at the time, are also red - the black, blue and white striped jerseys of the other local club ( Grêmio ) in which the Mexican selection played the game.
In the first half, the Swiss dominated the game and were deservedly 2-0 lead at the break. In the second half the Mexicans took over the action, but failed repeatedly due to the compact Swiss defense and the brilliant goalkeeper Adolphe Hug . So it was enough for Mexico only to one goal, which Horacio Casarín scored on the support of José Luis Borbolla after a dribble against André Neury .
For Mexico it was the sixth defeat in the sixth World Cup game. The only positive thing for el Tri was that it was their first defeat with only one goal difference. The previous five games were all lost by at least three goals difference.
Individual evidence
- ↑ According to page 28 of the cited book ( La Historia de las Copas del Mundo ; see sources), the jersey from Mexico was still wine-red with dark blue shorts and socks until 1952, before the green jersey with white shorts (and initially green socks ) was introduced (see overview of historical jerseys of the Mexican national team ).
