José Naranjo (born March 19, 1926 in La Experiencia , Jalisco ; † December 11, 2012 in Guadalajara ), also known by the nickname "El Chepe" (German: the hump ), was a Mexican football player in the position of the striker . He was the first of a total of seven players from the talent pool of the amateur club CD Imperio , who was nominated for a soccer world championship .

biography

society

Naranjo spent his youth at Club Imperio, an amateur sports club from the La Experiencia district in the north of Zapopan, which is extremely successful in training talented football players in its region .

He received his first professional contract in 1944 with Club Oro ; a club from the neighboring city of Guadalajara , with which he remained under contract until the end of his playing career in 1960. With a total of 96 goals that “El Chepe” Naranjo scored in his 16 years at CD Oro, he is the club's record scorer in the Primera División .

National team

Naranjo made his debut in the Mexican national team on September 25, 1949 in the 3-0 victory over Cuba, to which he contributed two goals.

At the Football World Cup in 1950 he was the first player from the offspring of his home club Imperio to be appointed to the World Cup squad and played in the games against Yugoslavia (1: 4) and Switzerland (1: 2).

In 1954 he was nominated again and played - together with his "old comrades" from the time at Club Imperio, Alfredo Torres (who was now under contract with city rivals Atlas ) and Raúl Arellano (who earned his money at Chivas Guadalajara ) - both games Mexicans at this World Cup. Three regular players from the offspring of an amateur club at the same World Cup should certainly be record breaking!

And Naranjo set further records: he was the only team captain of a Mexican national soccer team at a World Cup from the talent factory of Club Imperio and the player from its offspring, who played the most World Cup games with a total of 4 appearances.

Naranjo suffered from Alzheimer's disease and died in Guadalajara in December 2012 at the age of 86 .
