The Ndungu Dam (also Kalemawe Lake) is a reservoir in northern Tanzania , in the Kilimanjaro region .
description
The reservoir is located at an altitude of 500 meters and the Mkomazi flows through it. It is of great local importance for the irrigation of the surrounding rice fields and for fishing. The lake was built in 1956 by the British colonial government to provide a livelihood for the shepherds who were expelled from what is now the Mkomazi Game Reserve in 1951 .
The lake has now shrunk to half its original size, mainly due to overgrazing , extensive irrigation and deforestation and the resulting erosion.
