The Diocese of Hamhŭng ( Latin Dioecesis Hameungensis , Kor. 천주교 함흥 교구) is a Roman Catholic diocese based in Hamhŭng , North Korea .
history
Pope Pius XI founded the Apostolic Vicariate Wonsan with the Apostolic Constitution Concreditum Nobis on August 5, 1920 from cession of territory by the Apostolic Vicariate Seoul .
In July 1928 it lost parts of its territory to the Mission sui juris Ilan and to the Apostolic Prefecture of Yanji in China .
On January 12, 1940, it took the name of the Apostolic Vicariate Kanko and lost another part of the territory to the Tokwon Territorial Abbey .
On July 12, 1950, the name was changed again, as it took the name of the Apostolic Vicariate Hamhŭng. The elevation to the diocese took place on March 10, 1962 with the Apostolic Constitution Fertile Evangelii semen .
