Loch Hope is a freshwater lake in the Scottish highlands . It is located in the former county of Sutherland in the Highland Council Area . The lake has the typical elongated shape of a lake created by glaciers in the Ice Age . Loch Hope is approximately 9.5 km long, but only a maximum of 1.2 km wide. It is named after the mountain Ben Hope , which rises steeply above the southeastern shore of the lake.
Loch Hope is one of the northernmost lakes in Scotland. It lies between the bays of Loch Eriboll in the west and Kyle of Tongue in the east. The main tributary of the lake is the Strathmore River , which feeds Loch Hope to the south with water. In addition, numerous streams flow into Loch Hope along the entire length of the lake. The largest of these streams are An Garbh allt , Allt a 'Mhuillinn and Allt a' Phris Ghil . Loch Hope drains to the north into the River Hope , of which it is the source.
The banks of Loch Hope are largely uninhabited. Only on the north bank of the lake is the village of Hope , which only consists of a few farms. At Hope , the lake is accessed by the well-developed A838 . The east bank can also be reached via a small road from Hope . The western and southern banks, however, are not accessible by car.
Loch Hope is a popular fishing area that is only fished from boats. Trout in particular are caught .
Torran a 'Bhuachaille is a round cairn , with a depression in the middle, which probably marks the position of the chamber. It is on the west side of Loch Hope. A large vertical slab, perhaps the end stone, has been preserved. In the nearby desert of Arnaboll are the remains of another burial mound
