The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Seoul ( lat. : Archidioecesis Seulensis , kor. : 서울대 교구 ) is in South Korea location Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church , based in Seoul .

history

The Archdiocese of Seoul was founded on September 9, 1831 by Pope Gregory XVI. established as the Apostolic Vicariate of Korea . This was renamed on April 8, 1911 in Apostolic Vicariate Seoul and gave area for the Apostolic Vicariate Taiku . On August 5, 1920 parts for the Apostolic Vicariate Wonsan , on March 17, 1927 for the Apostolic Prefecture Hpyeng-Yang and on April 25, 1939 to the Apostolic Prefecture Shunsen from. On July 12, 1950, the name was changed to Apostolic Vicariate Seul . On June 23, 1958, it gave part of its area to the Vicariate Apostolic Cheongju and Daijeion and on June 6, 1961 to the Vicariate Apostolic Incheon . On March 10, 1962 it was approved by Pope John XXIII. raised to the archbishopric and renamed the Archdiocese of Seoul . On October 7, 1963, part of the area was given to the Diocese of Suwon . On June 24, 2004, this gave up parts of its territory to establish the Uijongbu diocese .

The shrine of the Korean martyrs in Seoul commemorates the waves of persecution of Christians in the 19th century .
