history

End of NY 216 at NY 55

Today's State Routes 216 and 55 were part of what was then State Route 39 in 1926. When renumbered in 1930, the section of NY 39 between East Fishkill and the western edge of Patterson became part of the newly established New York State Route 52 . The section of old Route 39 between Poughkeepsie and East Fishkill became New York State Route 202. Between Patterson and the junction with New York State Route 22 , old NY 39 was designated New York State Route 311 . A few years later, a section of NY 52 was re-signposted as New York State Route 216.

In 1938 the routes of NY 52 and NY 216 were swapped; State Route 52 was given today's route between Stormville and Lake Carmel and the former route between Stormville and Patterson became part of State Route 216. Until January 1, 1970, this route was no longer moved, but then State Route 216 in Poughquag shortened to today's endpoint. At the same time, the former section of NY 216 between West Pawling and Patterson was designated as New York State Route 292 .
