Marie-Nicolas-Antoine Daveluy (born March 16, 1818 in Amiens , France , † March 30, 1866 in Galmaemot , Korea ) was a French missionary and saint . His feast day is March 30th and September 20th with the 103 martyrs of Korea.
Life
Antoine Daveluy was born the son of a factory owner, councilor and government official. He came from a pious family. Two of his brothers also became priests. In October he himself entered the St. Sulpice seminary in Issy-les-Moulineaux and was ordained a priest on December 18, 1841 .
His first assignment was as an assistant chaplain in Roye . Despite poor health, he joined the Paris Mission on October 4, 1843 . On February 6, 1844 left as a missionary for the Japanese Ryūkyū Islands . In Macau , the new Vicar Apostolic of Korea , Jean-Joseph-Jean-Baptiste Ferréol, persuaded him to accompany him there. With them came Andreas Kim Taegon , a Korean seminarian who studied in Marcau. First they traveled to Shanghai . There Bishop Ferréol ordained Andreas Kim Taegon on August 17, 1845 as a priest. The three clergymen set out on the stormy crossing to Chungcheong-do in October .
Father Daveluy began his missionary work and spoke the Korean language fluently. He wrote a Korean-French dictionary, Korean books on the Catholic Church and its history. On November 13th Pope Pius IX appointed him . the titular bishop of Acre and Coadjutor of the Apostolic Vicar of Korea Siméon-François Berneux , who was appointed after the death of Bishop Ferreol 1854 Apostolic Vicar. Berneux consecrated him bishop on March 25, 1857.
After Berneux was executed by the Korean government, Daveluy followed on March 8, 1866 as Vicar Apostolic. The Koreans arrested and detained him three days later, and although he was tortured, he defended his belief. On March 30, Good Friday of the year 1866, he was executed together with the French priests Pierre Aumaître and Martin-Luc Huin and the Korean catechists Lucas Hwang Sŏk-tu and Joseph Chang Chu-gi.
The canonization of the five took place on May 6, 1984, together with Father Kim Bishop Berneux and 96 other Korean martyrs in Seoul.
