Félix Clair Ridel

Félix Clair Ridel MEP (born July 7, 1830 in Chantenay-sur-Loire , France , † June 20, 1884 in Vannes , France) was a French bishop of the Paris Mission in Korea .

Life

Ridel studied at the seminar in Nantes and at St-Sulpice in Paris . On December 19, 1857, he was ordained priest for the diocese of Nantes in Paris . He actually wanted to be a missionary, but obeyed his bishop and became vicar in La Renaudière . On July 29, 1859, he joined the Paris mission and on July 25, 1860, he traveled to Korea, where the preaching of the gospel was proclaimed. He arrived on March 31, 1861 and learned the Korean language in a village . He was sent to China by the head of the mission in 1866 to report on the ongoing persecution of Christians in Korea. He was one of three French missionaries who survived the Korean persecution of Christians in 1866.

On April 27, 1869 Pope Pius IX appointed him . the titular bishop of Philippopolis in Thrace and Apostolic Vicar of Korea . On June 5, 1870, Henri-Marie-Gaston Boisnormand de Bonnechose , the Archbishop of Rouen , with the assistance of Emmanuel-Jean-François Verrolles , Vicar Apostolic of Manchuria , and Bernard-Thadée Petitjean , Vicar Apostolic of Japan , donated to him in the Roman Church of the Gesù , the episcopal ordination .

He took part in the First Vatican Council . After the consecration, he went to Manchuria , stayed near the Korean border and tried to cross it several times without success. In September 1877 he succeeded. After persecution and a long absence, he rebuilt the Catholic Church in Korea . He was arrested in Seoul on January 28, 1878 and remained in prison until June 5. He was then expelled to China due to an intervention by the French ambassador in Beijing and the Chinese and Japanese governments. He wasn't allowed to return.

In the following years he wrote a grammar description and dictionary for the Korean language. In 1882 he was captured in Nagasaki and sent back to France. He died in Vannes and was buried in the local cemetery.
