Henri-Marie-Gaston Boisnormand de Bonnechose
Henri-Marie-Gaston Boisnormand de Bonnechose (born May 30, 1800 in Paris , † October 28, 1883 in Rouen ) was a French clergyman, Archbishop of Rouen and cardinal of the Roman Church .
Life
Origin and early years
His father was French , his mother Dutch . At first he enjoyed a Protestant upbringing, but at the age of 18 he converted to Catholicism and was baptized again on September 13, 1819 sub conditione .
His student years took him from Nijmegen to the Collège de Rouen , later he studied law in Paris and finally in Strasbourg . In 1822 he was admitted to the royal court in Paris. He was prosecutor in Neufchâtel-en-Bray and deputy chief prosecutor in Bourges , chief prosecutor in Riom , and in 1830 prosecutor general for the district of Besançon . On the advice of the Archbishop of Besançon , Louis-François-Auguste de Rohan-Chabot , he gave up the legal career and went to the seminary in Strasbourg.
Church career
He was ordained a priest in Strasbourg on December 21, 1833 and became a professor at the Strasbourg seminary. At the seminary in Besançon he was later professor of preaching .
On January 17, 1848, he was appointed Bishop of Carcassonne . He was ordained bishop on January 30, 1848 in the church of San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome by Cardinal Antonio Francesco Orioli , Girolamo d'Andrea , secretary of the Council Congregation , and Archbishop Domenico Lucciardi were co- consecrators . He moved to the episcopal see in Évreux on March 23, 1855 . He became Archbishop of Rouen on March 18, 1858. Emperor Napoleon III. often sought his advice when appointing bishops.
Pope Pius IX created him in the consistory of December 11, 1863 as cardinal priest , on September 22, 1864 the titular church of San Clemente was assigned to him.
He took part in the First Vatican Council . He also took part in the conclave of 1878 , from which Leo XIII. emerged as Pope.
After his death on October 28, 1883, he was laid out in the Cathedral of Rouen and buried there in the St. Peter and Paul Chapel. His tomb shows him kneeling in prayer.
