Sub conditione

Sub conditione ( Latin 'under the condition') is a technical term in the sacramental theology of the Roman Catholic Church and the Independent Evangelical Lutheran Church . In the Roman Catholic Church it marks the conditional dispensing of a sacrament , predominantly one thatimprintsa character indelebilis ( baptism , confirmation and sacrament of ordination), unless it is certain with sufficient certainty whether a previous dispensing of this sacrament was valid (can. 845 § 2 CIC ).

Typical use cases

baptism

  • in case of (premature or miscarriage) birth, if it is questionable whether the person to be baptized is alive. Donation formula z. B. Si vivis, ego te baptizo in nomine Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti. ("If you live, I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.")
  • in the case of a suspected lack of intent on the part of the donor or person to be baptized or in the case of a strongly corrupted baptismal formula at the "first baptism": donation formula z. B. Si non baptizatus es, ego te baptizo [...] ("If you are not baptized, I will baptize you [...]")

Confirmation or sacrament of ordination

  • in the case of a suspected lack of intention or inability of the donor to donate the confirmation, in the case of a lack of intention of the confirming person or in the case of a heavily corrupted donation formula for the "initial confirmation": donation formula z. B. Si non confirmatus es, accipe signaculum doni Spiritus Sancti. ("If you are not confirmed, be sealed by the gift of God, the Holy Spirit.")
  • If it is questionable whether a candidate is even able to validly receive the sacrament, the condition Si capax es [...] is also conceivable.

When administering other sacraments

  • in the sacrament of penance , if the adequate disposition is not established, but absolution is urgent (in danger of death): Si capax es [...] or Si vivis [...]
  • at the anointing of the sick , provided that death is possible or only a short period of time (max. two hours) has elapsed since the (medically determined) occurrence of death: Si vivis [...]
  • With the other sacraments, a sub-conditione donation is conceptually difficult to imagine.
