Piglet blower

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Piglet blower is the name of a device used in pig production that is used in farrowing houses to protect piglets from being crushed by the sow .

functionality

Newborn piglets usually stay with the mother until they weigh about 4–5 kg, which takes several weeks. The piglets, which are sensitive to the cold, usually lie under the sow. As soon as she stands up, there is a risk that some of the piglets will be crushed by the sow when she lies down. The devices, which are equipped with a radial fan , take advantage of the piglets' sensitivity to drafts and cold by automatically generating a strong flow of air when the sow gets up and thus driving the piglets out of the endangered area under the sow. The piglets then usually go to the warm and safe piglet nest , from where they later return to the mother when she lies down again.

Construction

The commercially available piglet blowers consist of an electrically operated , mobile fan, which is designed in a construction that is suitable for use in agriculture , i.e. in stalls, and is correspondingly robust and corrosion-resistant. According to the manufacturer's description, the device is controlled by a sensor in the form of a (modified) photocell , which reacts to the sow standing up and switches on the fan. When the sow lies down again, the fan is deactivated again by means of the sensor.

Any structural changes to the farrowing house are not required when using the mobile device.
